Why sun salutations
This flowing sequence consists of 11 poses that we flow through linking breath with movement. But, did you ever wonder why we see the Sun Salutation in our practices? Today, we are sharing the purpose of the Sun Salutations in your asana practice.
Here are the postures you will typically see with a Sun Salutation. Then inhale and lift the arms for five breaths. On the fifth exhalation, lower the arms, and on the inhalation, step the back foot forward to meet the front one. Lift the chest and exhale; fold into Uttanasana Standing Forward Bend.
On the next inhalation, lift the arms, leading from the sternum, and come up to standing bend the knees if the lower back is weak. Exhale, standing tall with the hands in Namaste. Feel the effects. Notice the flow of energy prana moving within as you stand vibrantly steady; the body enlivened, the mind steadied.
This can be the beginning of your practice or a full practice in and of itself. In Hatha yoga strength and stamina are prerequisites for more advanced techniques of asana, pranayama, and above all prolonged meditation. We train ourselves to distribute, purify and intensify these energies, whether it be the pranic vayus or the symbolic energies of the chakras.
