Why the church meets on sunday

The early church met on Sundays. Now, the skeptic might say that they met on Sundays simply because Saturday was already taken. It was too hard to gather for worship with the Sabbath restrictions and such, so they did the best they could and just met the next day.

The Corinthians met for worship on Sunday 1 Cor , and Sabbath restrictions were obviously not an issue there. Even the Jerusalem church met on Sundays, while still esteeming Saturday for Sabbath gathering Acts Sunday worship has practical spiritual benefits. This final argument is not from Scripture, but experience. There is profound benefit to structuring your week around a day of worship.

Setting aside Sundays to worship takes church from something you do when convenient, and transforms it into the anchor on which you start your week. I have sympathy with the idea that God wants people to rest one day a week. Burn out is bad.

Up until the beginning of the church, God's people were used to going to synagogue on the seventh day of the week Saturday which was called the Sabbath.

This was, and will always remain, the official Sabbath. However, after Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, Sunday, the New Testament shows that the early Christians began meeting together on this new day as a weekly commemoration of their new life in Christ. See also 1 Cor. This was their traditional heritage and where most of their neighbors, friends and family would congregate — a great place to witness.

However it seems about A. Is your Faith Founded on Fact? Have you committed to follow Jesus? What does the Bible say about husband and wife in marriage?

God instituted marriage in the Bible. It was never man's idea. After he created Adam, There are a lot of opinions about eating meat. There are plenty of different people with their own ideas. But what does the Bible tell us? Or even more-to-the-point: What does God say about Skip to content. But most Christians go to church on Sunday instead of Saturday. Why the disagreement?

And how do we resolve it? Another persistent question is what day God rested. The Sabbath law was never the way to salvation. After all, he is the creator of all things. Well, the Apostles indeed attended the synagogues on Saturday. They worshipped on Sunday, as most Christians do today.

Do Not Judge The first thing to remember is that it is ungodly for anyone to judge someone based on the day they engage in worship. We are judged by your hearts, not the days of our worship. If your worship takes place on the Saturday , so be it. Jesus is our Sabbath now. Worship In Joy Remember that whatever day you choose to worship does not matter.

Now on the first day of the weeks. Luke - The references to the first day in Mark and John merely note that certain people came to Jesus' tomb around sunrise. Mark's reference in verse 9 tells us that sometime right after Mary Magdalene came to the tomb that Jesus appeared to her.

Note, however, something interesting. The books of Mark and John were both written in 42 A. Yet, more than a decade after Christ's ascension , they do not call the Sunday on which these events occurred the "Lord's Day" or state that what happened occurred on the day believers go to church! The New Testament is void of any mention that the first day of the week should be hallowed or that what occurred should be commemorated e.

Luke tells us that certain women prepared spices and ointments for Jesus' body. Then, instead of immediately applying what they made to Christ's body, they rested "on the Sabbath according to the commandment. Anointing a body was considered work. This means the women finished their preparations just before sunset Friday, rested Friday sunset to Saturday sunset, then went to anoint Jesus' body as soon as enough light was available to do so early Sunday.

Luke's account, written almost thirty years after the events he describes occurs, hides an obvious fact. The work needed to anoint Jesus, which in obedience to God could not be done Friday sunset to Saturday sunset the seventh day of the week , could be performed on the first day!

This means in 59 A. Afterwards, as evening was drawing near that day, the first day of the weeks, and the doors were shut. John Was the early church celebrating the Sabbath on Sunday?
